Richard Swensson, MD

Dr. Swensson is an experienced, board-certified pediatric cardiologist and is currently the Director of Pediatric Cardiology at Long Beach Miller Children's Hospital and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. He also is on the staff of many other Los Angeles and Orange County hospitals.

He was educated at Harvard University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine. His pediatric training was at the University of Texas and he was trained in pediatric cardiology at the Universities of Texas and Colorado Medical Centers. He is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.

Dr. Swensson's career has included extensive experience in academic and private practice settings. He previously held the position of Chief, Division of Cardiology at the University of New Mexico and more recently has held academic appointments at the University of California at San Diego (1983-91) and UC Irvine (1991-95).

His interests and areas of expertise include echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, and interventional cardiac catheterization. He enjoys teaching and has received many awards for his educational expertise. In 1998, he was voted Physician of the Year by Long Beach Memorial's prestigious Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. Swensson is currently the Director of Pediatric Cardiology for Pacific Cardiovascular Associates. He has served as consultant to many electronic and cardiovascular manufacturers. His offices are located in Laguna Hills, Fountain Valley, and Long Beach. He sees patients by appointment only.

His non-cardiac interests include sailing, skiing, and writing medical software applications. He is president of Cardiology Software Systems. He is married and is the father of four children.

Dr. Swensson is an outgoing and friendly individual. He prides himself on making the pediatric patient feel comfortable and welcome in both inpatient and outpatient settings. "I love the challenge of caring for infants and children. Making them feel comfortable and unthreatened in the office or hospital setting is very gratifying," he says. "Children are our most precious commodity and must be treated with love and respect. Being able to care for them is a privilege and a joy."
